It’s Homecoming at Oak Hill High School, and students are getting very excited for the week of events. Students are saying it’s going to be even more active this year considering there are a lot more students going to Oak Hill High School with new students from Fayetteville and Valley.
Spirit Week is five days of fun. And the first day is ‘Merica Monday.
Natalie Underwood said, “‘Merica Monday is a day to express our appreciation and love for the United States of America by wearing our traditional colors red, white, and blue. We’re showing off our pride for our country, while representing our class. By having more students involved, each class will gain points by who participates. By having the most points, a class will be rewarded with an incentive.”
Tuesday is Jocks and Nerds Day.
Shannon Farrow said, “Jocks and Nerds Day is basically just dressing either really nerdy, geeky with glasses and suspenders or like a jock with leather jackets and jerseys.”
Wednesday is VSCO Girl/ E Boy Day.
Sky Treadway said, “It’s where you either dress up as a VSCO Girl or you dress up as an E-Boy. I think it’s going to be funny to see all the boys dress like VSCO girls. I think people will want to get involved because it’s a trend right now through social media.”
VSCO girls are environmentally conscious and enjoy certain 90s girl trends. They are carefree, loving, and have a vintage aesthetic. E-Girls and E-Boys are active internet users, often stereotyped as emo-styled anime and gaming fans trying to get attention on social media.
Thursday is the Throwback Thursday, also known as Decades Day.
Siera Underwood said, “Throwback Thursday is going to be the day all the students dress up as their assigned decade. The seniors are the 60’s. The juniors are the 70’s. The sophomores are the 80’s. And finally, the freshmen are the 90’s. We should all be excited for it because it’s our Homecoming theme this year. It’s a battle of the classes. I expect it will be a fun competition. Plus, the Powderpuff football game is that day.”
Friday is the Homecoming football game and Spirit Day; wear red and black.
Hannah Ramsey said, “Spirit Week is important because it brings the school together by participating in fun activities that go beyond organized sports, and dressing up just makes it fun for everyone. Being part of school functions, really betters the experience for most. How fun it is going to be? Well, hopefully, it’ll be a blast. There will be competitions between grade levels in the gym, float parties, and so many other activities.”
There’s a pep rally at the end of the week, and whichever class screams the loudest and shows the most school spirit gets the Spirit Stick. If you drop the Spirit Stick, the legend is that the whole school gets cursed. This rumor has not been confirmed.
The Homecoming Parade is at 5 p.m. at the Oak Hill City Park on Friday, September 27th. The parade will end at the football stadium, prior to the big game. There will be fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, and business vehicles. The parade will also feature students, including the football team, the soccer teams, the volleyball team, the OHHS band, majorettes, the dance team, and the cheerleaders. The Homecoming Parade is a big deal to our community.
Students are very creative with their float designs. The float parties are open to anyone that would like to help out with the decorating. The float parties are every day during Spirit Week, with the exception of the parade day. Students that want to participate should contact Mrs. Shepard.
Oak Hill will play Lincoln County for the Homecoming game. Will the Homecoming game will turn this season around?
Coach Blankenship said, “Yes, every game is important, but the Homecoming game always has a special feel to it that adds motivation for players and coaches to do their best. There is nothing better to help our team morale than getting a win.”
Mrs. Shannon, the student council sponsor, said, “The Homecoming theme this year is Blast From the Past (Decades). Our Homecoming theme and days are not specific to Oak Hill, except for Friday. We do hold a traditional Spirit Day every Friday of Homecoming for the football game. Students from Fayetteville and Valley also gave us ideas from their Homecoming weeks in order for us to incorporate some of their traditions. We were more than happy to add things that will be enjoyed by all of our students. Our student council looks forward to hosting it for the first unified time and adjusting from here on out to ensure that we meet the needs and wants of all of our kids.”
Homecoming week ends on Saturday with a school dance, which alumni are allowed to attend if they are younger than twenty-one years old. The Homecoming Dance is semi-formal, unlike Prom or the winter formals.
Student Council is also requesting items for the Homecoming Dance.
Freshmen and Sophomore classes are asked to bring in twelve packs of soda and bags of chips. Junior and Senior classes are asked to bring in twelve packs of soda and packages of cookies. The presidents are bringing in water and a twelve packs of soda.
As you can see, there is a lot planned. The student council has worked really hard putting together this week of events. Show your support by participating in the activities.
This Spirit Week will be a Blast From The Past!
